Let me remind us of the keys we are looking at in the Believer’s Prayer found in Ephesians 3:14-21; strengthened by power through Holy Spirit in the inner man. Christ will dwell in them by faith. The power of God’s love to work in them, rooted and grounded. They can know the fullness of God. Then can know the power of God working in them.
We looked at being rooted and grounded in love last week. We stated this is no ordinary love, this is love though should off such intensity that Paul describes it by using two metaphors rooted and grounded.
The fourth request is to have a full understanding of all spiritual things in verse 18
And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is.
Ephesians 3:18
It is crucial that the believer understands God’s eternal plan and glory salvation which is covered so wonderfully in this book of Ephesians. The first three chapters of Ephesians tell us some wonderful things:
- The great blessings of God.
- The knowledge and power of God
- The mercy and grace of God
- How God has brought us peace through Jesus.
- The church who and what it is.
- The new body of believers God is forming which is called the mystery of Christ.
Christ has done so much for the believe that it cannot be measured in terms of breath, length, depth and height of God’s love. Therefore believers are told to pray and seek God that we would have an increase and understanding of what God has given us.
All believers must attempt to comprehend the breath and length and depth and height of God’s amazing love, only then we can fully understand with all the saints God’s amazing love. You might argue that 100% is impossible, but what about 20%, 40% etc? How do I start to comprehend? Let us look at a verse which might help.
Proverbs 2:6 says the Lord gives wisdom out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Throughout the Scriptures we find that these three key words are often linked together.
Knowledge
Maybe the best Greek word is “gnosis”. This concept involves the accumulation of information or facts about a certain object or thing. An example would be knowing a lot of facts about the doctrine of salvation, or maybe Marxism, or a sports team. Studying the genuine to spot the counterfeit. The opposite of knowledge would be ignorance.
Look at Luke chapter 1 Since I myself have studied everything carefully from the beginning, most excellent Theophilus.
How much time has you spent studying the facts?
Wisdom
The Greek term that best fits concept is “sophia”. In this context it means to have keen insight into the true nature of things. It is more on the theory side of knowing. Sophia also means skill, tact, or expertise in something.
Understanding
One Greek word is “phronesis”. It refers to good judgment, or the skill to govern our life in a careful, successful manner. This can be in the practical realm of living life. It is to be able to figure out the best decisions that will lead to the best results.
The Holy Spirit will help you with the last and final step which is being able to have the wisdom to use or apply that knowledge to a real life working situation. In this case it is to comprehend God’s amazing love. And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love.
Whatever you are in right now the Holy Spirit will help you to grow more and more in God’s amazing love. James reminds us to ask God for wisdom.
Learn the truth and never reject it. Get wisdom, self-control, and understanding.
