As we end the week looking at how names fit the person to whom they have been connected, I hope it has encouraged you to revisit or even for the first time look into the names associated with God. They will give much comfort in whatever situation you find yourself in. Today let us look briefly at two.

El Elyon. A priest of the most High

There is in Genesis 14 a very interesting character. His name is Melchizedek. We read Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was a priest for God Most High and blessed Abram, saying, “Abram, may you be blessed by God Most High, the God who made heaven and earth. And we praise God Most High, who has helped you to defeat your enemies.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had brought back from the battle. This man is again featured in the New Testament in the book of Hebrews.

What the writer of “Hebrews” wants you to know is that he considers Jesus as the new Melchizedek the new high priest.

The Hebrew word “Elyon” is a word meaning “to go up”. In the Bible, it is referring to God’s exaltation and supremacy, the God who is far above all and in control of both heaven and earth.

How great to know that our God is in control, powerful and represents us in the highest of heavens. Jesus stands for us. Can you put yourself in any greater hands? I think not. To have Jesus representing us gives us encouragement and hope.

You see there is another name given to Jesus found in the gospel of John. It is the word PARACLETE. In general, the word Paraclete signifies: (1) a legal advocate, or counsel for defence, (2) an intercessor, (3) a helper, generally.

So we have the name El Elyon. A priest of the most High and Paraclete a representative acting on our behalf.

El Olam-The Everlasting God

Finallyin Isaiah 40:28 we see another name for God. Listen to what Isaiah says ”Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth”. There’s more. “He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”

Can you see there is a God who is simply always there regardless of the situation you face? Can I say there is no situation that will ever take God by surprise for He has already seen it? He never changes and is so dependable. So please take time to look at the names and whatever life throws at you you will find a solution in the name of God.

Stay Safe and Blessed
